"You get what you ask for." What you hope, is that when it comes time to ask for your next security system, you ask for the right thing. In the security community, there are thousands of manufactures with competing equipment and options, each one boasting to be the "the Best". How can you be sure that your next security system is worth more than the sum of its parts?
For example, when making a camera selection for your next CCTV project, you should consider the following variables:
- Color or Black/White
- Camera resolution
- Available lighting
- Type of lens
- Focal range
- Camera durability
- Power requirements
If you are not specific in what you ask for and require from potential bidders, you will see all combinations of these variables, usually chosen by the vendor based on his profit. If you could use assistance in planning and designing your next system, give Nicoletti & Associates a call, we are happy to help.
Security System Hardware
At Nicoletti & Associates, we can help you with your security equipment needs. We specialize in providing security equipment for challenging security environments where reliability and durability matter. We focus on providing:
- " CCTV Cameras
- " Remote Viewing
- " Digital Video Recorders
- " Access Controls
Our desire is in helping our clients understand CCTV technology and assist in obtaining advanced security equipment to satisfy their security program. Nicoletti & Associates equipment services include system specification and procurement.
You may ask yourself, why use Nicoletti & Associates if my local dealer has security options available. Someone once said "the smallest thread is as strong as the mightiest cable when there is no strain upon it." In other words, if you have not identified your actual needs, then anything will do. Your disappointment will come when you begin to use your new system and wish it could do more. At Nicoletti & Associates, we understand the important questions in system design and can make sure the systems you acquire match what you need. Don't believe this matters? We find that a significant amount of our work comes through reworking someone else's "solution" that isn't working.
Read the following example of product confusion we recently heard from a puzzled client.
The client had heard from his local vendor that he had a great new Digital Video Recorder that could record an entire year's worth of video on a 30 gigabyte hard-drive. The client wanted to know if we had a comparable system. The answer was both YES, … and NO.
Let's talk about the YES. We could configure a digital video recorder, like the local dealer, to record one camera every 10 seconds which could theoretically record for 365 days before it started recording over the old video.
Now let's talk about the NO. Most of our clients require more than one camera to record and need to record more than one picture every ten seconds. Just consider how much activity can transpire in ten seconds.
- A person walking leisurely can travel 15 yards
- A world class sprinter can run 100 yards
- A car traveling 35 miles per hour can travel 170 yards
- In other words, you have to hope that any activity happens during that one frame every ten seconds, or your system is useless.
By contrast, a movie looks fluid-like to the human eye at 24 frames per second (the security industry considers 30 frames per second to be full-motion video). This means that compared to your actual view of the world, the "great new recorder" is actually viewing only one picture out of every possible 2,400 pictures that you could see. If that works for you, buy the system. If it dos not ask us what else is available.
If you need some help designing your next system, or just don't want to pay retail for your next hardware purchase, give us a call.
Testing, Quality control, Commissioning
At Nicoletti & Associates, we believe that if you are going to get reliable use from your security system, you had better make sure it is working, as it should. We take a scientific approach to commissioning a new system. We work with our clients to establish the requirements for the system. We establish with them the protocols for response in the event of alarm activity, work through positioning and focusing the camera systems, and even provide penetration testing to validate that the system will trigger upon inappropriate activity.
For our clients, we work to establish standard operating procedures, which define the level of service expected from the system. We work with the manufacturers of the equipment to ensure the systems can provide the functionality sought. Then we aid our clients in configuring the system to yield the results the system was designed to provide
Services include:
- Construction Project Management
- Contractor Invoice Review
- Post installation commissioning
- Penetration Testing
- Standard Operating Procedure formation
If you need more than an "out-of-the-box" security solution, let Nicoletti & Associates help you ensure your next system performs as promised.
Remote Monitoring
Nicoletti & Associates now provides real-time remote video monitoring as a service to its clients. Through this service, trained Nicoletti & Associates staff will help you keep watch over your property, assets or facilities 24 x 7, to either augment or supplant your existing security staff.
Why monitor?
There is an old saying that "a watched pot never boils." In a security manner of speaking, crime also seldom boils over when being watched. Since being caught is the primary deterrent to crime, monitoring your CCTV system increases the risk of catching criminals and further reduces the crime reward and ultimately the crime itself.
How much does it cost?
Our clients have found that those paying for 24x7 guard service can reduce their reoccurring expenses by as much as 75% through remote video monitoring. How is this possible? Guarding is mostly about watching and waiting for something to happen requiring a response. For this intermittent service, you have to pay guards full-time salaries to wait for these sporadic events. However, with Nicoletti & Associates's monitoring service, you pay for only what you need, when you need it. The result is that while your CCTV system records everything, we respond only when something requires attention. Call a Nicoletti & Associates consultant to help you determine just how much you could save through providing comparable services.
What does monitoring mean?
Monitoring your CCTV system means more than simply looking at your camera to see that it is working as is suggested by some monitoring companies. In fact, our research indicates that crime is rarely if ever detected through the so-called use of "video patrols". To be successful in using your CCTV system to reduce crime and crime opportunity, your CCTV system should be actively monitored with focus on trouble spots, should be set up with triggering mechanisms so that suspicious activity is immediately brought to the attention of monitoring staff, and finally, maintains the perception that monitoring occurs. At Nicoletti & Associates, we use our expertise in criminology, technology and investigations to help you achieve the benefits you sought when you first installed your CCTV system.
Does it work?
Over the past several years, Nicoletti & Associates designed CCTV systems have been effective at reducing crime as much as 68% in several high-profile areas in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver in cases where the systems have been monitored. The effectiveness of these systems and other CCTV systems have decayed, however, as the clients have reduced or eliminated active monitoring of these sites. Conclusion? Monitoring works.
Give Nicoletti & Associates a call to see how monitoring can work for you. We will help you determine a cost/benefit analysis of remote video monitoring to aid in your decision making process. In the end, whether Nicoletti & Associates monitors your system, or whether you monitor it on your own, keep monitoring.
